Eskom’s lack of planning & comical leadership structures will start to put major dents in the disposable incomes of all South Africans in the next 3 years. They have already tabled their proposed tariff increases to NERSA from the next 3 years and given the increases they have already been granted in 2007 & 2008 it is most likely that they will get these 2.
To put this in some perspective lets see what the past and future increases will have on an average household….
2007 – Ave Monthly Electricity Bill R500
2008 – 27.5% increase – Bill now R637.50 (still not too bad)
2009 – 31.3% increase – Bill now R837.00 (starting to creep up here)
2010 – 40% ? increase – bill now R1171.00
2011 – another 40% increase – bill now R1640.59
2012 – yet another 40% increase – bill now R2296.83
This shocking picture is taking shape as we speak. Can you imagine paying over R2k for electricity every month?
What is really shocking is that 2008 & 2009 increases did not take into consideration new buildings, these increases were just for maintenance – general rate increases, none of the extra money went to building anything new – well except a few nice houses and cars for the big boys!
Eskom only plans to start using 2010 and beyond’s increases to start funding expansion and building plans. A total of R385 billion for new COAL fired plants – can you believe that this figure is only for coal, they have not planned a single renewable/cleaner energy station. Their plans to have 15% generation from renewables by 2013 is a farce…..
It is quickly becoming evident that it is time to start SERIOUSLY adjusting how we live. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
